“Jake!” she blurted.  “Take me with you!”

            He stopped, his gut clenching.  He hadn't seen that coming! 

            He waited for her next move, staring at her face, flushed beet red, amber eyes begging.

            “Please," she whispered. 

            The walls closed in, smothering him.  He didn't want to hear what he knew she was going to say.  He didn't need that kind of complication.

            "I have nowhere to go.  I don’t know anyone, and if you leave, I’ll lose the only person who has treated me with kindness since I’ve been here.” 

            She reached up and took off her diamond earrings.  “My parents paid three thousand for these as a graduation present.  I’ll give you one now and the other when we arrive in Seattle.”

            He rubbed a hand over his face, giving himself time to think.  She was so beautiful, standing there, looking lost and sad.  Damn it!

            He checked the hallway and then pushed her back, stepping into the room.   “Even if I wanted to, which I don’t know that I do, I can’t.”

            “Why?”  Her lips trembled.  Tears filled her pleading eyes. 

            His stomach plummeted.  He hated tears!  He didn't know how to deal with them.

            “Because this group of emigrants are pretty religious. They wouldn’t take kindly to an unchaperoned female traveling with me.”

            “Even if I’m paying you – like a business deal?”  She took his hand and placed one of the studs on his palm.  His fist closed instinctively around the gemstone.  Holding the gem to eye level, he scrutinized it.  Why was he even considering it?  But damn it!  He was tempted!

            “Pretty rock.”   He handed it back and looked away, feeling guilty.  He wasn't good at these kinds of things.  Taking care of another person didn't fit in his plans.  She didn't fit in his plans.  He liked being alone.

            “They’re perfect – my parents made sure of that.” She repeated her offer.  “One stone now and the other when we reach Oregon.”

            “And I repeat – these people won't allow you to go with me.”

            “What would it take to get you to take me?”  Tears spilled down her silken cheeks.  "I'll do anything."

            Instinct caused his hand to reach up and cup her face.  The texture of her skin felt like satin, soft and smooth.  His heart beat sped.  She got to him in ways he didn't understand.  His thumb stroked the soft contours.  “If it was up to me, I’d let you go,” he conceded.  “But they pay for my services.  Maybe if you found a man to marry you, we could figure out something.”

            “Get married!  To just anyone?”  Shocked, her eyes glimmered in the lamplight.

            His hand dropped.  “Best I can come up with.  If you’re married, they might let you go.”  The thought of her with another man tore at his gut! He wanted to kill the bastard!  He gritted his teeth.  She belonged to him!  No other man had the right to touch her!

            She drew in a deep breath, blurting out.  “Jake, listen to me.  I know this is sudden but I don't have any other option.  I don’t know any other men.  Will you marry me – in name only?  Once we’re in Oregon, I’ll give you a divorce, and it’ll be like it never happened.  You can go on with your life, and you’ll have my diamonds to help buy that property you mentioned.” 

Jake shook his head, heat boiling his guts. “You want me to marry you just so you can get to Oregon?”  He didn’t know why, but her suggestion sickened him.  He'd let her get to him with her tears and her sadness.  She'd almost convinced him she was special, but she wasn't.  She was just a whore, an expensive one, but a whore.  

            “I don’t have any other choice.  I have to get to there and this is my best chance.”   

            “So – you are willing to sell yourself - for the right price,” he growled, irritated that it bothered him so much.

            Her eyes shot amber sparks.  “Not selling myself – I’m buying you.  There’s a difference.”

When You Feel You've Hit the Big Time!

Stepping Into Audio Books

I've yet to have one of my books made into audio, but...Aimee's Locket, published by the Wild Rose Press, is being made into an audio book.  So excited and looking forward to the finished product.  Originally, the narrator was a woman but some family issues occurred and she had to back out.  Now, the narrator is a man. He has a wonderful, western sounding voice, deep and interesting and I think he will do well for my book, simply because Aimee's Locket is a time travel novel, set in 1847, on the Oregon Trail.  For a glimpse at Aimee's Locket, check out the trailer on youtube. So the Season is On!

Well, I did my best to avoid the season, but the flu snuck in and attacked me.  I'm one of those holdouts for the flu shots. The only year I had one, I ended up with the worst flu I've ever had so I usually avoid them against all my family members' encouragement and warnings.

But my senior citizen mind might just be changing.  If this session lasts too long, I suspect I just might.

Here's hoping if your flu season happens, it is a short one.

Time Travel and Writing the Novel

Of course most of you who know me know that I started out as a time travel novelist and then added in some paranormal and then science fiction romances.  

I've always been an avid reader of time travel and watch every movie I can about the same.  An old favorite was the first Time Machine when I was young, although the later version certainly had its interesting points.  

Time travel is so compelling! Who wouldn't want to step back in time if nothing more than to just confirm what our history lessons have told us.  I don't consider myself religious though I believe, but if I had the chance, I would travel back to meet Jesus.  Just a personal "would do."  Even traveling into the future has its interest. View what man has done or not done!  My favorite haunt for finding time travel ideas is the History Channel which is where I found my ideas for Fiona and Riley's Journey.


My very first book, Fiona, is a time travel story and based on the discovery of the Urumchi Mummies in the Taklamakan Desert in Northern China, to be precise, the mummy of a young woman thought to be a sacrificial victim.  I always felt she should have had a better ending that what was given her, so Fiona came into being.

My second novel, also time travel, was based on

the discovery of the frozen mummy Otzi in the Alps.  Why was he there? What happened to him. Riley's Journey was conceived, although in the writing, I sent her back a lot farther in time than poor Otzi. Because of the continued interest in my subject matter, I want on to write two sequels to Riley's Journey - Into the Savage Dawn  and Beyond Tomorrow.


My third time travel novel, Aimee's Locket, came

about because my husband thought I should write a western, so Aimee's Locket was written for him.  I've always been interested in the Oregon Trail so wasn't hard to decide to put Aimee on the long journey.

I'm off to find my next time travel book/movie and disappear into the past - or the future as the case may be.

Oregon Trail - Where Would I Be on August 15

I've always had a fascination with the history surrounding the Oregon Trail.  Emigrants gathered at Independence and formed trains, leaving around mid-April to May and if they were lucky, made it to Oregon City before winter set in.  How long was the Oregon Trail? Approximately 2,000 miles. Travelers were lucky if they could make 10 to 20 miles per day, taking into consideration, the weather, the condition of the trail and a hundred other factors that could affect their travel.  Today, August 15, I made some general calculations based on information I found, and where I imagined the emigrants would be today based on those general calculations.  If the travelers left on April 15 and made 15 miles per day, I calculated they would be at the top of the Blue Mountains in Oregon, part of the Oregon Trial.  Interestingly, Wikipedia says: In the mid-1800s, the Blue Mountains were a formidable obstacle to settlers traveling on the Oregon Trail and were often the last mountain range the emigrants crossed before passing down the Columbia River Gorge to the end of the Oregon Trail Oregon City.

Between 1840 and 1860, from 300,000 to 400,000 travelers used the 2,000-mile overland route to reach Oregon City, Puget Sound, Utah, and California destinations. Life on the wagon trains was harsh. There were many hardships and challenges along the way on the Oregon Trail. Some hardships of the journey were death of relatives due to accidents, Indian attacks, supply shortages, weather, drowning, disease, terrain, and even medicine.  A challenge faced by most travelers was to steady their usage of money along the Oregon Trail.  These hardships were fatal, but not as much as  the problem of reaching and passing the mountains before winter begins. Some of these problems were not as harsh as others, but each posed a dangerous threat to them finishing their journey.http://oregontrailrus.weebly.com/hardships.html

Overlanders on the Oregon Trail, in contrast, quickly learned that Conestoga wagons were too big for their needs: the huge, heavy wagons killed even the sturdiest oxen before the journey was two-thirds complete. Their answer to the problem was dubbed the “Prairie Schooner,” a half-sized version of the Conestoga that typically measured 4′ wide and 10′ to 12′ in length. With its tongue and neck yoke attached, its length doubled to about 23 feet. With the bonnet, a Prairie Schooner stood about 10′ tall, and its wheelbase was over 5′ wide. It weighed around 1300 pounds empty and could be easily dismantled for repairs en route. Teams of 4 to 6 oxen or 6 to 10 mules were sufficient to get the sturdy little wagons to Oregon. A Weird Thing Happened on the Way to.....

Have you ever written a story, used what you thought were imaginary scenarios only to find facts later on to validate your creation?  I have and let me tell you, it can be somewhat unnerving and downright spooky.

As an example, while I was writing Aimee's Locket, of course I researched the Oregon Trail but I also used my own imagination in creating my characters and situations.  One that really sticks in my mind was the character, Charlie Tuttle, who was a young boy on the wagon train.  I had already written Charlie solidly into the story when I again did some research on the subject and came across a trip manifest for a wagon train at almost the same time as I based my story, and one of the travelers was Charles Tuttle! I had chills running up my spine on that one.

I love the research part and find it immensely satisfying to find facts to validate or give substance to my story.  But then there are those moments when I truly wonder if someone or something tapped me on the shoulder.
