Thankful at Thanksgiving! #thanksgiving #thankful #holidays

Awww! Thanksgiving! One of the eating festivals of the year - and my favorite. Who can resist the turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, and desserts of all types of flavors.  Not me! That's for dang sure!

It is also a time of giving thanks and I give mine. I've struggled to remain upbeat and thankful the last six years but with acceptance, I can be thankful. Accepting!  That was the hardest part but now I can appreciate what I have and am starting to look forward again with hope.  I could list the thousands of things I'm thankful for, but just know I am!

Do me a favor. Give someone you love a hug - even if it's a cyber-hug. Even those are welcome!  And don't forget to be thankful. With the media doing its worst to bring a person down, hang in there and smile!

Sending my own cyber-hug to all of you this Thanksgiving.

Creating a New Web Page - Where to go for Help!!!!

So I am in the process of creating a new webpage, one that I can work in myself and not have to pay more than my pocketbook allows for a web tech to keep it up-to-date. I currently have my website with godaddy but the price there keeps going up each year so I began looking for other options.  I drafted one in Wix and it is looking pretty good, but I guess there are some issues with prices going up, etc., at least that is what my web tech indicates.  She set me one up in Wordpress but all I got from playing around in there was anxiety, irritation and anger.  Anyone have some good suggestions for themes in Wordpress which would fit my needs?  I want to customize it to fit me, not the webpage designer and I have all my pictures ready, just need to start the process.

Unlike a lot of people, I'm not techy, so whatever I do needs to be for the tech-challenged.  I do have a book entitled "Web Pages for Dummies." Perhaps I should read the dang thing.

Oh well - we do what we can.

What if you awoke 200 years in the future, captive to an alien lord?

Decimated by the savage Deg’Nara and teetering on the brink of extinction, the last surviving males of the once great Chiagan-Se embark on a quest to salvage what is left of their civilization. They send their remaining seeker ships into the void, searching for genetically compatible females. Time is running out, but in the far reaches of the universe, on an obscure and primitive planet, a match is discovered.

One thousand panic-stricken women awaken two hundred years in the future, captives aboard an unmanned alien spacecraft bound for parts unknown! How had they gotten there and why?

The males thought they came willingly. The females believed they’d been kidnapped. Full of hopeful expectation, the Chiagan-Se prepare for the arrival of their new mates. Terrified and furious at the inexplicable abduction, the women prepare for combat! And when the two sides meet, the battle commences.

Spring into Spring

Spring has sprung! Spring into Spring! Springtime in the Rockies! Whatever!  It is finally Spring!  The long winter is over - we hope!  Crocus and daffodils are pushing up, trees are budding!  My favorite time of the year.  I love Summer too, but nothing says life is renewed like Spring.

Blessings of Spring to you and yours!

Weekend Wallop - WIN

The Breeder Prince - WIN

If I’m going to do something, I’d better do it fast! Maybe a small distraction, long enough for the two to escape…if they were smart enough to flee when the time came.
He slipped from his perch and dropped, belly-crawling through the spiny undergrowth. Intent on keeping track of the Deg’Nara soldiers’ positions, he failed to see one of the prickly plants growing rampant on this planet. As his hand came down, a poison-tipped barb imbedded in the muscles of his palm. Flaring waves of intense pain raced up his arm. Cursing his stupidity, he ripped the barb free. Not enough to kill me but more than enough to cause some major discomfort!
More jeering laughter as the Deg’Naras found another unlucky soul. Peering through the brush, he gritted his teeth, biting back a growl of rage as a soldier crushed the victim’s throat beneath his heavy boot. The stalkers drifted nearer, formed a circle around the gory spectacle and cheered the executioner to even greater lengths. Strutting and posing for the benefit of his audience, the thickset mongrel delivered more blows to the now lifeless form.
The gruesome entertainment sidetracked the Deg’Naras’ attention but it wouldn’t be long before they renewed the hunt. He reached back and retrieved a long tube from his pack, ignoring for the moment the agonizing throb of his injured hand. Carefully snapping off a number of barbs from the spiny bush, he fitted them into the tube and drew a deep breath. If he could make the bastards believe the projectiles were natural hazards of the planet, they might be tempted to leave. He picked a soldier standing on the far side of the circle and blew. The squat form jerked, howling in agony as a stubby hand slapped at his fat neck.

He injected more barbs into the tube and blew. Another warrior screeched, spanking his shoulder where the barbs lodged. More barbs joined the first two barrages before he melted back into the brush, working his way along a dry wash. Howls of pain and sobbing curses rent the air. He kept his head down, inching through the scrub. If the two entities were smart, they’d be moving!

Christmas Art - the Other Side of Me!

As an aspiring author, my creative time is limited, but over the years, I have been inspired along other lines.  These are just a few of the Christmas wall hangings I made and gave away, every one hand stitched - nothing that I didn't design, cut and sew except for attaching the backing to the hanging, which I used my sewing machine.  Lots of hours and love are in these.

WIP - Sunday Teaser

Work in Progress - my latest entitled (for now) Breeder Prince, sequel to The Chalice

The planet was nothing but a barren wasteland and who knew what other perils else existed here.   If they kept him alive and he was anything like the other Chiagan-Se, he’d fight to the death to protect them.
She reached for his water skin.  He struck out, knocking her hand away.
“What are you doing Deg’Nara?”
“Quit with the insults! I’m not a damned Deg’Nara and I’ll help you if you’ll let me.” With slow and careful movements, she resumed her efforts, touching and patting. He watched but did nothing to aid her. With a small crow of triumph, she pulled the bag from under his shoulder.  “Now we’re getting somewhere.”
“Ask if we can have a taste,” Moira implored. “I cannae hardly talk my throat’s sae dry.”
Leah leaned over the male, grasped him by the nape of his neck and then lifted his head. She dribbled several mouthfuls between his parched lips.  He gulped several times and then slaked his mouth with his tongue, emitting a sigh of relief.
“How was your arm injured?” She lightly touched the purple flesh of his hand.
He jerked as if stung. “Poisonous plant. I picked up a barb while I was watching the Deg’Nara.”
“Serves you right,” she muttered in English. Maybe she should find a few more and add to his misery.  Might make losing Sharon less painful.
“May we share your water?” Good manners never hurt, even in this situation, but if he refused, she’d give some to Moira anyway. They needed a drink.
One light eyebrow arched over a blazing blue eye. “Why would I share my water with Deg’Nara bastards?”
She could feel warmth rush to her face, even in the sweltering heat. His insults were really beginning to wear on her patience.  Suppressing the urge to strangle him, she exhaled, counting to ten before she spoke. “As I have said several times, we’re not Deg’Nara and I don’t appreciate your nasty comments.  Let’s get this straight. If you need us to help you and if you won’t share your water, we’ll just walk away.  It’s very simple.”
The full lips quirked. The blue eyes registered expanding clarity.  “How long do you think you’d survive without me?” The uninjured hand brushed back his sweat-soaked hair. “I’ll allow you a few sips, but that’s all I have until we reach my campsite.  Do you understand?”
“Of course,” she sputtered, annoyed and insulted.  “Do I look like an idiot?”
The brow arched again. “Since I don’t know what you’re supposed to look like…”

Carefully, making sure each drop hit its mark, she dribbled more water into his mouth, mostly to shut him up.

Out With the Old - Not Me!

"Out with the old and in with the new!" Not a phrase I adhere to.  I love my old friends, my old mom and dad, my old dog, my mature husband (won't say "old," he'd be offended), my old housecoat, my old van - a lot of  "olds" in my life.  Yes, it is nice to add the new, but not out with the old.  Here's wishing you the best New Year and may all your hopes for a new and better year be rewarded.

Happy 2013!

Bug in with Romance - the Hunter

How would life change if we experienced a major civilization-ending event and were forced to return to our primitive beginnings? The question arises—in such a situation, what food sources would be available and how would we find them? At the present time, we have our high powered rifles, hand guns plus an abundance of ammunition but as time passes, the ammunition would diminish and eventually disappear if we lost the ability to produce more.  If no bullets, no use for guns other than perhaps as clubs. What would be the alternatives? If I didn’t have a gun and bullets, what would I use?

Hunting bows have been in use for thousands of years. Some alterations have occurred—the invention of the crossbow and then the compound bow.  Early man also hunted with spears, atlatls (spear throwers), clubs or created scenarios wherein they stampeded herds of larger animals such as mammoths over cliffs and the resulting carcasses then butchered. Smaller animals such as rabbits and even birds could be hunted with slings. We re innovative when we have to be.
We would not be the only creatures on the hunt. We would be in competition for the same food sources as the carnivores who roam the wastelands. But as the competition, we would also become the prey. As our available protein sources diminished, there is even the chance we would turn on each other.  There are actually over 50 big game animals hunted in North America.  I’ve included a few of the more standard: Pronghorn Antelope, Bears, American Bison, Caribou, Deer, Elk, Mountain Goat, Moose, Peccary or Javelina, Bighorn Sheep, Walrus, and Seals to name a few.
What would be in my emergency bag if I was a hunter?  A hunting bow, arrows, heavy duty skinning knife with at least 4” blade, something to mask my scent (keeping in mind what is indigenous to the area), and if possible, a length of cloth to cover the carcass after the kill, camouflage clothing as well as a compass and a canteen of water. Baking soda makes a reasonable odor killer.  Some natural scents are pine needles, mashed acorns or even dirt.  A deer’s sense of smell is 100 times greater than a human’s.  Keep in mind wind direction.  Downwind from your prey is best when stalking.
If you aren’t one of the lucky ones and have a good bow, hunting bows can created from flexible green saplings of at least an inch in diameter of apple, ash, black locust, cedar, elm, hemlock, hickory, mulberry, sassafras, willow. Cut shallow grooves around either end of the wood about one inch from each tip for stringing. Bowstrings should be approximately 8 inches shorter than the bow.  In a pinch, nylon cord, boot string or lacing, but if none available, sinew, silk, rawhide, linen or hemp twisted together.  Tie the bowstring to one end locked into the groove. Tie a slipknot at the loose end of the strong, brace the bow (stave) against the ground and slip the knot into the other groove. Make sure the cord is tight and that the stave does not break when bent.  Some Indians used hide glue to glue sinew to the back of the bow, making it that much more sturdy. Wrap tape or leather around the middle of the blow to make an arrow rest.
Arrows (I suggest 50 on hand):  Hollow reed or willow branches about 3 ½ feet long and about half an inch in diameter.  Whittle narrowest end into a sharp point, char the pointed tip over hot coals, cut  a notch in the opposite end for a place to rest the bowstring.  Fletch the arrow with loose feathers split down the middle and attaching the sides opposite one another.  Melted pine pitch makes a good glue.
Early man lived off the land. Much of the foodstuffs eaten by those hardy individuals would be scorned today as inedible and just downright yucky.  Insects, rats and snake meat would become the usual fare. People in Africa still eat grasshoppers (high in protein). In Texas they have the annual rattlesnake hunt and feed off the fruits of their labor. Rats have managed to survive throughout history. Does the idea of rat stew cause your mouth to water? If a person is hungry, he’ll eat almost anything.
Foraging for edible plant life would also take a good portion of our time.  There is an abundance of books on the market about edible and inedible plants and it might behoove all of us to have a few on hand. What plant life is edible? There are the usual, berries, nuts, and wild tubers, but beware, not all plants are edible and some are downright poisonous. Most people aren’t aware that the leaves of dandelyons are edible and tasty if picked when young in salads or boiled like spinach and medicinally can be used to prevent scurvy and other diseases. Certain parts of young cattails can also be eaten in a pinch. I have also eaten watercress picked from high mountain streams. Tom Brown’s Guide to Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants  is a good handbook to have. http://www.amazon.com/Browns-Guide-Edible-Medicinal-Plants/dp/0425100634
So if a cataclysmic event occurs and we are forced to return to our primitive selves, items that might come in handy and we should all keep several on hand are – running shoes!
Remember, the Mayan calendar didn’t account for Leap Years so in all actuality, the apocalypse should have happened sometime ago!
