REQUIEM - Book 4 in the Star Brides (Deg'Nara) Series

Blurb:

The rebels are losing the intergalactic war.

They need a prototype of the Deg’Nara’s latest weapon, a planet-killer, to survive. A covert operations team is tasked with finding and retrieving the weapon. Their mission is proceeding as planned but goes horribly wrong when Ashyr, a space pirate, swoops in and literally tears the weapon from the team’s hands.
Cam can’t let that happen. Impetuous, reckless, and determined to retrieve it at all costs, she throws herself onto Ashyr’s ship and the battle begins.

Sunday Snippit:

One eye popped open. With a low groan, Cam forced the other to follow. Her head ached as though a million drums were pounding an uneven rhythm through her brain. She cringed in pain. Even her teeth hurt! She started to raise her hands and rub her forehead but then realized she was lying on her side on a lumpy cot with her hands and feet bound behind. Not much chance of escape!

Water! What she wouldn’t do for a glass of water right now. Her mouth felt like cotton and tasted like shit!

“You’re awake,” a deep voice grumbled.

Cam’s lashes fluttered as she fought to focus. The bug-eyed, green-skinned alien of her nightmares stood before her. “Yeah, and lucky for me, the first thing I see is your butt-ugly face.”

With a growl, he fiddled with his wrist-com, releasing the shackles binding her feet and then dragged her upright. “Ashyr wants to see you. Now!”

“Sorry. No can do,” she flipped, shaking her head. “Got a bitch of a headache. Female thing you know.”

“You go,” he snarled as he shoved her through the entryway into a dimly lit corridor.

Sarcasm was always her favorite weapon when she was scared—and she was terrified right now and so stinking alone. “Help me out here! What do I call you besides creepy or ugly? Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with either one.”

She could almost feel the steam emanating from his scaly green skin, but after a few parsecs, he grudgingly answered.

            “I am called Falis.”

She managed a short laugh even though her heart was pounding. “Ah! Phallic? Good name. Fits.”

            “Falis! My name is Falis.”

Phallic! Falis! Sounds the same. Most of the males on our planet go by the name of phallic or phallus in one way or another. Doesn’t matter, but we usually shorten it to Dick!” She gave him a sneering smile. “Dick! Perfect! That’s what I’ll call you. So much more intimate.”

She was rewarded by another hearty shove. She stumbled and started to fall but managed to throw her shoulder forward and avoided landing face first on the cold metal floor.

She rolled to her back, glaring at her antagonist. “That was really hurtful Dick! And just when I thought our relationship was improving.”

He raised his huge foot preparing to kick, which left his gonads, or what she hoped were his gonads, exposed. Instinct and self-preservation took over! Quick as lightning, she raised her foot and landed a solid blow to his privates. He fell back, emitting a high-pitched squeal. Four-fingered claws clutched the injured parts as he thrashed on the floor of the corridor, howling as though he was in the throes of death.

“Any chance you’re having trouble with erectile disfunction? If so, I think I fixed the little problem.”

If her situation wasn’t so dire, she’d almost feel elated. She rolled to her knees and scuttled backwards keeping a sharp eye on the thrashing alien. Dick’s wrist-com most likely held the punch code to release her hands and she needed that code! She edged closer, almost frantic in her haste to obtain his wrist-com and get free! She dropped to her butt. Her bound hands made grasping his wrist all the more awkward and Dicky-boy’s berserk movements made it almost impossible! If she could only get a good hold…

She froze as a panel to her right slid open. The light emanating from the interior framed the form of a tall figure. Silvery eyes glowed from the shadowed face.

            “I see you’re awake.”

Her stomach did a flip-flop. This most definitely was the one in charge. Ashyr, she recalled Falis saying. “Yeah, and I was just on my way to complain about the accommodations! Dick, here,” she tossed her head in Falis’s direction, “isn’t the most congenial porter I’ve ever encountered.” She heaved a long, self-pitying sigh. “I had to carry my own luggage!”
