Vampires, the Walking Dead and Other Things That Go Bump in the Night!

So the month of October is upon us! Time for All Hallow's Eve.

Halloween dates back to the pagans and thought to have originated with the pagan festival of Samhain. It was also thought that at this time of year, the walls between the worlds thinned, enabling spirits to pass through and mess with their crops. Bonfires were lit to scare off evil spirits and offerings of food and drink were set up. Begging at the door grew from an ancient custom of knocking at doors to beg for a "soul cake" in return for a promise to pray for the dead. The Romans celebrated a like festival in honor of the goddess Pomona.

But modern man has turned Halloween into a fun celebration replete with costumes, trick or treating and parties!

Night creatures stalk the dark, vampires, zombies, witches, ghosts, goblins - you name it, they're out there searching for unwary victims. Personally, I stay home and hand out candy. Not going to tempt the fates.

Anyway, what could be more fun than a vampire story at Halloween and I have just the one for you. Absolution

Saturday Snippet - Absolution

Snippet for your enjoyment from my vampire romance Absolution!

He paused, skimming the index with one pudgy finger. “I think the first thing we need to do is teach her to fly. That way, she can escape if she needs to.”
“I canst not fly! I told you that.”
Shauna patiently explained. “You’re a vampire. According to legend, vampires can fly.”
“Well, the mean guy doesn’t really fly. He just kind of dissolves,” Earl pointed out.
“Actually, she’s not a vampire,” Benny said, scanning a page. “She’s a dhampir—half vampire, half human.”
“Dhampir. Vampire. What’s the difference?”
“I haven’t read that far yet.”
“P’raps if I be not a vampire, I canst not fly,” Chloe interjected, hoping to put an end to the absurd discussion.
“Let’s see.” Benny read on. “No…no, even half-vamp, you still have powers.” His brows lifted. “Don’t you remember?”
“About what?”
“You know…  Twice, when you got pissed, your eyes glowed red and your nails got long and creepy. We all saw it!”
Shauna and Earl nodded, affirming his statement.
Pain pounded at her temples. Frustrated and dismayed, Chloe strode to the window, looking out over the sea of lights. Though late, the city was alive with night revelers, frolicking without care, unaware that Jochad’s minions lurked in the dark corners, feeding on the unwary. Her stomach cramped. It was a while since she’d fed as well, but unless Earl had found sustenance, she would have to wait.

New cover and lower price. $1.99 on Amazon.

Vampires - Love 'Em or Leave 'Em

My childhood was filled with scary movies. My older sisters dragged me to every scary film there ever was, and back in my childhood, you could go to the Saturday matinee - which always involved two movies for the price of 20 to 25 cents per child.  It was a win/win situation for my family. Mom got some alone time and we kids got to go to the movie.  Although at times, I would rather have stayed home, given the amount of horror films I witnessed during that time of my life.

Vampire movies were the bane of my existence, but I have to admit, now I love watching them.

Nosferatu (one I have never seen) was a silent picture that was produced in 1922, the very first vampire movie. Ugly as sin and his image evoked the very heart of evil.

Me, I'd rather watch a movie or TV series where the bad guy is a hunk - like Gerard Butler as Dracula.

Or, Alex O'Loughlin in Moonlight

Or, Alexander Skarsgard in True-Blood

Or, Luke Evans in Dracula Untold

Or Lyle Schmid in Blood Ties!

And for you male bloggers, who can forget Kate Beckinsale in the Underworld movies?

So many to choose from so why waste your time on the hideous ones?

In the spirit of Halloween, I'm giving away an e-copy of Absolution! My first and only vampire love story.  Leave a comment to be entered to win!

Happy Halloween!

Vampires Need Love? Sunday Snippet! #chicklit #parnormalromance #booklovers

I find it funny how vampires have evolved over the decades. From the ugly Nosterafu of early films...

To the handsome, albeit predatory, vampires of modern day.

It is said vampires have the ability to shapeshift, turn into mist, fly through the air, see like a cat in the dark, and have extended lives.  Their big drawback is the fact that they have to drink blood, and preferably on the hoof – and human. Kind of takes the thrill out of meeting one. Fangs would also be a problem.  Who really wants to kiss someone with huge fangs and bad breath is reported to be an attribute the vampire are said to have.  Modern writers have transformed some of the evildoers into sexy defenders of the unwary – which isn’t all bad.

Vampires have existed in the lore of many cultures for centuries. Tales of blood-drinking spirits are considered to be the precursors of modern day vampires.  Almost every ancient culture had its own bloodsucker, notably the goddess Sekhmet of Egypt.

We love them all! Nothing like the fear of the dark to heighten the senses, or the tantalizing dream of living forever to fuel the imagination.

If you enjoy paranormal romances, those with vampires as lovers, you might like my novel.

Excerpt:

The huge warrior, Zaccarius, stalked forward, shoving him aside.  Chloe hissed, barring her fangs at the intruder, her eyes glazed with heat.
“Stay away!” She spat, raising clawed hands.
A grim smile twisted the warrior’s lips.  “Do not fight me, little one!”
Quick as lightening, she struck out, clawing a shallow red gash across his chest.
Zaccarius’ lips thinned.  “It will go better for you if you do not fight me!”
Chloe slashed again, flitting across the room.  “Get away!” she screeched, “afore I kill ye!”
Determined, he pursued her, gliding easily out of reach when she attacked.  She feinted to the side and then spun, slashing the air.
“I will hurt ye,” she growled, spitting defiance.
“I suspect you’ll try.”
“I do not want to,” she whispered, but struck again.
Zaccarius detected a forlorn glimmer peeking from the depths of her heated eyes.  She wasn’t fighting to win.  She was fighting to protect him.  Inwardly, he grinned.  The skirmish was almost over.
Forced into a corner, she crouched, ready to spring.  The moment her eyes drifted, seeking an escape, he pounced, wrestling her to the ground and pinning her while she thrashed and kicked, raking his back with sharpened nails.  She fought as a wild thing, arching back and bucking, attempting to dislodge him.  The cords of her neck strained with tension as she snapped at his neck, pinching skin as her fangs found tissue.  So inhumanly strongbut so utterly female!
With her every motion, his body reacted.  Long forgotten needs surfaced – needs he’d not felt since he was human.
With one expert flip, he threw her over his shoulder and marched into a nearby bedroom.  Flicking the bolt across, he locked the door behind him and tossed the little wildcat onto the huge bed.  Bouncing up, she flew at him, claws extended, going for his face.  He caught her effortlessly and tossed her back.  Now that she was removed from the dimwitted duo and their female cohort, he was enjoying the strenuous encounter.  She would not give in easily and he exulted in her uncontrolled attack.  It had been too long since he’d enjoyed the tender caresses of a lusty female - albeit an unwilling one.  And given time and the right instruction, she would make a powerful adversary in the war against the dark ones.  He just needed to convince her.
Chloe!” he barked.  “Stop!  Remember who you are!”
“Nay,” she growled, hissing like a furious cat.  “Tis too late!”
She launched herself at him, using the bed as a springboard.  In a blur of motion, he threw up a forearm, covering his face.  They collided with a loud thump, going down in a writhing heap of fangs and slashing claws. Rolling over, he held her prone while she thrashed, snarling, snapping and mouthing epithets.  Held thus, he studied her, entranced by the fine texture of her silken skin, the pert well-formed nose and full, luscious lips, stretched now over extended canines.  Tiny but exquisite, she was rounded in all the right places.  Her breasts, flattened against his chest, were full and soft, and he longed to caress them, licking the nipples to taut peaks.  Lodged between her thighs, he waited for the storm to pass.
Unexpectedly, she lunged upward, piercing his throat. As she drank, he experienced a brief moment of discomfort and then his mind burst as soul-wrenching sexual need flooded his being, burgeoning up in uncontrolled waves of primitive heat.  His fangs descended.  A red haze blurred his vision.
Chloe stiffened, pulling back.  Stunned and horrified, eyes flaring, she gasped, lush lips trembling with fear and humiliation.
“I didst not mean such,” she whispered, tears glistening in her incredible eyes.  “Ye must destroy me afore I hurt the innocent.”
“But you didn’t,” he rasped, his voice guttural with need.  “Even in blood lust, you didn’t hurt anyone.”
“But I attacked ye and took blood,” she cried, stricken.
He nuzzled her neck, inhaling the fresh scent of lilies.  “We are what we are,” he murmured, licking her throat with sensual intent.  “We didn’t choose this life, it was thrust on us.  What matters is how we continue.  Taking blood is the only way to survive, but we don’t have to kill to do it - and none need to remember us afterwards.  I’ll teach you how.”
“Ye canst not teach me what I doest not wish to know.”
The temptation to sample her body becaume an almost overwhelming need, but kissing her was the only possible response considering the circumstances, and he did so, parting her lips and ravaging her mouth.  His blood lingered on her tongue, spicy and seductive.  The stiffness of her body lessened, curving deliciously against him. He pressed the attack, relishing her subtle response even as she fought to deny him.

'Twas Eight Days Before Christmas...

'Twas eight days before Christmas.... The gong of doom sounds! Cookies are made. The banana bread's baked! All should be good - except I haven't finished my shopping!  What happened?  In a normal year, I'd be feeling smug, enjoying the lull after the storm! But not this year! I'll have to venture out in the cold, amongst the hordes of crazy shoppers and pray that I can find those few amazing items still to complete my shopping list.

I don't know about you, but I can only take shopping for about two hours and then I'm done! I find it hard to keep in the holiday spirit with so many insane people are out and about. I was actually standing by my shopping cart the other day when a young woman talking on her cell phone ran into me and knocked me out of the way! Did she even notice? No! Or if she did, she didn't care!

If I want that fat little man in the red suit to visit my house, guess I'd better get on the sleigh. So with nothing left to me, I will venture out, place myself in harm's way and finish what I started!  Next year though....

Halloween - How about a Minion Halloween?

I have to say I love
Halloween decorations though I'm not particularly inclined to put them up myself.  When the kids left, so did some of the decorating.  But over the years I've developed a fondness for Minions, they make me laugh! So why not Minion Halloween?

In any event -

OOOPS - these aren't minions, but love them just the same!

Halloween - Beware the Vampire who seeks Absolution.

Vampires have existed in the lore of many cultures for centuries. Tales of blood-drinking spirits are considered to be the precursors of modern day vampires.  Almost every ancient culture had its own bloodsucker, notably the goddess Sekhmet of Egypt.

The Persians were the first to have tales of such creatures left on shards of pottery. The biblical figure of Lilith was considered a blood drinker, subsisting on the blood of babies. In ancient Greece, Empusa was the daughter of the goddess Hecate and transformed herself into a beautiful young woman and feasted on the blood of her lovers. Tales of blood drinkers are found in the ancient transcripts of India as well as appearing in old Jewish stories. And of course the most famous in history, Vlad the Impaler, and Countess Bathory (most prolific female murderer).

Vampire sightings in Transylvania caused a frenzy among the populace with stakings and grave diggings to identify the culprits.

Vampires in modern lore encompass both the good and the bad. Good vampires hunting the bad and bad vampires virtually feasting on any and all.

Most of us are captured by the lore of the vampire. Creatures who fly in the night, drink the blood of the unsuspecting and, if things go bad, end up in the same ungodly fix!

So beware!  All you who venture out on All Hallows Eve! The creatures of the night are circling.

Okay, so let's have a little contest.  Leave a comment and be entered to win an e-copy of Absolution.  While this is a horror story, I can't seen to write a book that doesn't have humor in it. Take a moment to watch the trailer!  I think you'll enjoy it. Contest ends November 1!

It's almost Halloween! A vampire who seeks absolution! The slayer who judges her worth!

October! Fall is in the air and a favorite holiday looms near! And who doesn't like Halloween? Jack-o'-lanterns adorn the haunted
houses, bats careen across the night sky,  gargoyles pose, ready to leap on the unsuspecting, goblins hide in the forest, switching babies for their own unholy spawn, witches brew their poison, zombies catch the unawares for a late night snack, ghosts haunt everything imaginable, werewolves howl at the moon, vampires drink the blood of the innocent, demons stalk the night. The TV is rife with horror movies, enough to scare even the strongest of hearts. I for one love to curl up in front of the TV and wile away my time hiding behind my blankie while these terror-inducing stories fill the screen. Sound like fun to you?

But what about a vampire who doesn't know she's one? Does she deserve to be forgiven?  Find out before the witching hour.

Absolution by P.L. Parker. $2.99 on Amazon.

For years, travelers in the French Vosges Mountains heard the wailing of a woman echo in the hollows. Her cries went unbidden. No one was brave enough to seek out the source. Over time, the screams lessen, then stop. Eventually, even the memories slipped away, forgotten.

Six centuries later, two over-eager research assistants find and release the young half vampire, Chloe—unaware of events they unwittingly unleash with her.

Far away, other forces are aware of her awakening. Zaccarius, greatest of all the Slayers, is sent by the Council of Nine to seek out Chloe, determine her worth and render justice. Enticed by her purity and innocence, he becomes her protector. However, Jochad, the Dark Master and his army of evil vampires are eager to claim Chloe.

In the battle that ensues, Zaccarius falls beneath Jochad’s army. To save her lover, Chloe must make a choice. Ancient and dying, Jochad needs her blood to reanimate. His ultimatum—her blood or Zaccarius’ life.
