Foibles and Then Some #plparker #scifi #scifiromance #adventure

Foible:  a minor weakness or eccentricity in someone's character. "they have to tolerate each other's little foibles"

I've noticed as I get older I'm developing some foibles that I never had when I was younger - at least I don't think I had!

Maybe it's the way life is these days but one of my biggest foibles is when my freestanding toilet paper holders are not completely stocked! It drives me so crazy, I have to immediately fill these babies up! I've decided it's because we had the great coronavirus toilet paper shortage and I developed a fear of having no toilet paper! Silly, I know, but a foible of mine own.

I have found that I do tend to add foibles to my characters in my stories.  Perfection is boring and real people have foibles.

In my novel, REQUIEM, my heroine, Cam has several, the most noticeable one is her tenacity when faced with overwhelming odds.  She just can't let whatever it is go.

REQUIEM

Excerpt:

Nadic and Seisyll darted from the darkness and raced across the lit area, crouching near the service door adjacent to the refuse pit. With an economy of motion, the weapons tech hacked into the security system and the door angled open.

She ambled towards their position, keeping a close watch for any unforeseen trouble. With a brief wave of his hand, Nadic followed by Seisyll slipped through the opening and disappeared.

Now we wait! Her teeth clenched. She hated this part! She wanted to be right there in the thick of things! Not out here! Adrenaline kept her on edge but her only outlet was to continue the charade of patrolling the perimeter and keeping watch. As the newest member of the team, she was still working to prove her worth but she felt she was gaining ground bit by bit. Nadic, one of Lord Tegan’s warriors, proved to be a tough team leader but a fair one. He’d given her a chance long before any of the others would even consider her and she’d done her best to show him he’d made the right choice.

Her lips curved in a slight smile. If things went right, at some obscure time in the future, she planned to investigate whether he had any personal interest in her. He hadn’t bonded with any female to her knowledge and from her perspective, he was open season.

Time slowed to a sloth’s pace. Her skin crawled, tingling nerve endings stimulated by the stress of waiting. The faceplate clicked and a small screen opened up in the lower left corner displaying the operation from Nadic’s perspective. Surprised, her pace slowed for a fraction of a parsec. The weapon was far smaller than she’d envisioned. Hardly big enough to create the chaos surrounding its purported destructive use.

Nadic and Seisyll were engaged in scanning the unimposing mechanism, working in a concerted effort to ensure every angle was photographed and transmitted to the ops techs. The faceplate clicked and retrieve the weapon flashed across the screen. Seisyll’s slanted eyes rounded, exhibiting astonishment but with a shrug, he bent to the task.

This was supposed to be a simple snatch and grab—grab whatever data they could on the weapon and scram. Not grab the damn weapon itself!

She gritted her teeth, forcing herself to keep the strolling pace but every atom of her being demanded she race to their position and lend aid. Only the knowledge that Nadic would have her head on a platter kept her walking the perimeter.

Got it!” Seisyll hissed.

She tensed even tighter as the weapons tech hoisted the weapon and stored it in a large pack and then snapped the bag shut.

Nadic’s hand fisted. “Done! We’re leaving!”

Her relief died a quick death as her vid-com screen blinked off.

What the f…!”

The compound erupted in a blinding flash of high-powered pulse beams! Startled, she hunched down and then jumped sideways as a huge chunk of the compound wall toppled down and then rolled, almost crushing her. The screeching whine of attack vessels almost split her eardrums as a squadron of fighter aircraft rained destruction on the fortress. In swift succession, pulse blasts wiped out the guard towers and portions of the high wall. Within parsecs, against the blazing glow of the detonations, dark figures rappelled from a transport hovering over the central command turret—Nadic and Seisyll’s last known position! What the fuck!

She punched her fist against the faceplate attempting to reconnect but the apparatus appeared dead, registering nothing. She flipped up the useless apparatus. Catching movement, she watched as Drust almost fell over the rim of the high barricade, tumbled down the extraction rope and landed in a heap at the base of the wall. She raced over, caught a fistful of his vest and dragged him from beneath the torrent of debris falling from above. A quick check of his vitals confirmed he was alive but severely injured. There was no sign of Ursula!

Against mission protocol, she tapped her wrist com. At most, it was only good for close communications but right now it was all she had.

“Nadic! Seisyll! Report,” she hissed.

Nothing!

To her right, beyond the refuse pit, an unidentified alien vessel dropped down and settled on the ground. A portal opened up but all she could see of the interior was blackness.

She dragged Drust further into the dark, injected him with a pain inhibitor before covering him with dried brush. It was all she could do until help arrived!

The compound door slammed open and a figure raced out. In his arms, he clutched a bag!  Nadic? Seisyll?

But no! The lone figure raced towards the waiting transport!

The bastard’s stealing our weapon!

Aghast, she stood up and then charged after the figure, running full tilt across the uneven ground. The team had spent too many long rotations in planning this mission and it was far too important to give up now!  Her quarry reached the transport and clambered in as the portal door began to swing shut. Without conscious thought, she jumped, flew through the air and landed headlong in the interior. She rolled to her feet, coming face-to-face with a bug-eyed green alien, she started to raise her weapon before pain wracked her brain and the lights went out.

Love These Reviews! #requiem #plparker #spaceopera #aliens #deg'Nara

As an author, nothing pleases me more than good reviews.  I've grown accustomed to the less than good reviews and have learned to take them with a grain of salt!  Not always easy but it comes with the job!

Reviews are so important and it isn't always easy to receive the reviews, or as many of them, as we'd like, but when we get those good ones - Wahoo!

Here are just a few I've received on Amazon for my latest novel REQUIEM, Book 4 in the Star Brides (Deg'Nara) Series.

"...Requiem is the latest installment of P.L. Parker’s Deg’Nara series. It has a lot going on with a fast-moving plot, a full cast of characters, action, adventure, suspense, intrigue, a space pirate, romance, and more. Requiem is a well-written story from start to finish." N.N. Light

"...I found this book to be a well written story and exciting. Characters are easy to relate to. Loved it." jumperboo2

"...The book grabs ahold and not only won't let go but refuses to let go. It truly is a must read for any one let alone a P. L. Parker fan." Double J

Keep those reviews coming if you've a mind to!

Move to Canada? #scifibooks #romancebooks #spaceopera #alienabduction

As a writer, I keep track of my sales all over the world.  For some reason, my novels seem to do better in Canada than here.  Why is that?  I've often thought I should move to Canada because of my popularity there but with Murphy's Law, I'd move there and then my novels would do better here.  Guess I'll just have to stick it out here and hope my sales start moving up!  Now that I have more time to write and do the promo crap, I'm hopeful.

Even with the issues my life has been forced to endure these past years, I have managed to get out another book and my latest novel, REQUIEM, is due to be released on May 21.  Print copies are available now.

 Excerpt:

Both excited and sad, Cam stared out the viewing screen, watching and waiting for the rebel techs’ arrival. She looked forward to being back with the team but leaving Joss—and Ashyr—filled her with melancholy and deep-seated loss. Joss was her best friend and Ashyr, well, Ashyr had carved out a place in her heart. Not that he knew he had, but she knew. Just thinking about leaving and possibly never seeing him again caused her heart to ache.

Why do I care! She’d barely seen him since they arrived at the Mogishada fleet several cycles ago, mostly passing in the hall or catching brief sights of him across the way in the immense cafeteria. He was avoiding her and she couldn’t understand why.

She leaned against the viewing pane, relishing the coolness against her forehead, the action centering her and easing somewhat the dismal direction of her thoughts.

I should be ecstatic! Not down and disheartened. Being back with the rebels where she belonged was a good thing. What she wanted. She’d keep busy, involved. Work up a good sweat and go to bed, too tired to dream about what might have been. Ashyr was a pirate and he had no real affiliations other than those loose connections with others of his kind. Mooning over him wasn’t doing her a damn bit of good.

So why did it hurt so much?

“Ashyr’s looking for you.” Thrall’s husky voice startled her from her reverie.

She leaned back, fingers rubbing the faint moisture from her brow. “Why?”

He shrugged. “Didn’t say. Just said if I saw you to let you know he wanted to speak to you.”

That familiar thrill of anticipation coursed through her veins. It also irritated her that the mere mention of his name set her female parts thrumming.

“And I’m supposed to just jump when he snaps his fingers?” She spun on her heels, planning to escape.

He caught her arm before she could move away. “He wants to talk to you about something. I don’t know what but maybe it’s important.”

Important? What could be important now that the Mogishada had the kraebek? That was the only reason he was here! Against her better judgment, her innate curiosity kicked in. Didn’t hurt to at least find out what he wanted.

“It’d better be important,” she muttered. “Where do I find him?”

Thrall spoke into his wrist com. “I found her. She wants to know where you want to meet.”

Ashyr’s voice clicked on. “I’ll meet her at her quarters.”

Cam slanted a glance in Thrall’s direction. “Does he even know where my quarters are?”

“I do,” Ashyr’s voice replied. “Meet me there in five.”

Thrall’s fingers slid across the wrist com, ending the connection. His lips curved in a slight grin as he studied her stormy features. “Relax! It could be something good.”

“Meet me there in five,” she snipped, mimicking Ashyr’s voice. “Like I’m holding my breath and just waiting for him to call.”

In all actuality, she was, but no reason for him to know that. Wasn’t like she had anything better to do anyway.

Thrall waved one hand as he strode away. “Do yourself a favor and be nice.”

“I’m always nice,” she protested. “Most of the time anyway.”

She caught his derisive snort as he rounded the corner.

Jerk! She could be nice. Very nice if the situation warranted but Ashyr hadn’t been the easiest guy to get along with.

I wanted to share this quote from one of my best fans/friend as to my latest novel, REQUIEM:

REQUIEM - He had her weapon but that wasn't going to last! #scifiromance #scifi #romancebooks #spaceopera

Wondering what REQUIEM is all about?  You came to the right place!

Blurb:

The rebels are losing the intergalactic war.

They need a prototype of the Deg’Nara’s latest weapon, a planet-killer, to survive. A covert operations team is tasked with finding and retrieving the weapon. Their mission is proceeding as planned when it goes horribly wrong.  Ashyr, a space pirate, swoops in and literally tears the weapon from the team’s hands.

Cam can’t let that happen. Impetuous, reckless, and determined to retrieve it at all costs, she throws herself onto Ashyr’s ship and the battle begins.

Excerpt (one of my favorites):

One eye popped open. With a low groan, Cam forced the other to follow. Her head ached as though a million drums were pounding an uneven rhythm through her brain. She cringed in pain. Even her teeth hurt! She started to raise her hands and rub her forehead but then realized she was lying on her side on a lumpy cot with her hands and feet bound behind. Not much chance of escape!

Water! What she wouldn’t do for a glass of water right now. Her mouth felt like cotton and tasted like shit!

“You’re awake,” a deep voice grumbled.

Cam’s lashes fluttered as she fought to focus. The bug-eyed, green-skinned alien of her nightmares stood before her. “Yeah, and lucky for me, the first thing I see is your butt-ugly face.”

With a growl, he fiddled with his wrist-com, releasing the shackles binding her feet and then dragged her upright. “Ashyr wants to see you. Now!”

“Sorry. No can do,” she flipped, shaking her head. “Got a bitch of a headache. Female thing you know.”

“You go,” he snarled as he shoved her through the entryway into a dimly lit corridor.

Sarcasm was always her favorite weapon when she was scared—and she was terrified right now and so stinking alone. “Help me out here! What do I call you besides creepy or ugly? Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with either one.”

She could almost feel the steam emanating from his scaly green skin, but after a few parsecs, he grudgingly answered.

            “I am called Falis.”

She managed a short laugh even though her heart was pounding. “Ah! Phallic? Good name. Fits.”

            “Falis! My name is Falis.”

“Phallic! Falis! Sounds the same. Most of the males on our planet go by the name of phallic or phallus in one way or another. Doesn’t matter, but we usually shorten it to Dick!” She gave him a sneering smile. “Dick! Perfect! That’s what I’ll call you. So much more intimate.”

April is always such a sweet month - life returning, birds singing, flowers blooming!  I love it.

This year (and month) I have more to celebrate! My scifi romance novel, REQUIEM, is due to be released from New Concepts Publishing.  Book 4 in the Star Brides (Deg'Nara) Series.  This one has been a long time coming.  Enough family issues that I didn't have the time or motivation to write.  But I have to say, this is one of my personal favorites!  I hope your spring is all you hope it to be!

Time to Read? Grab a Book!

Okay, so a little self-promotion never hurts, especially if you have a product that helps in these trying times.  Reading has always been a joy for me.  I've read countless books in my life and am always looking for that new read.  Currently, I'm reading the Alien series of books and enjoying every one.  I love scifi and read scifi and paranormal almost exclusively.  What about you?

I'm currently working on a fourth book in my Star Brides series and I'm liking what I've written so far.  Just need to get time to write.  Maybe soon.

If you're looking for a new read, try one of my books in the Star Brides series. Each is a stand alone so you don't have to read every one to enjoy the book.

Here they are:

The Chalice:  One thousand panic-stricken women awaken two hundred years in the future, captives aboard an unmanned alien spacecraft bound for parts unknown! How had they gotten there and why?

The males thought they came willingly. The females believed they’d been kidnapped - and when the two sides meet, the battle begins.

Snippet Time! A Little Something to Tempt Your Reading Buds!

Time for a tempting snippet - a little something to get the old reading buds going.

Abbaddon Rising.

Summary:  Joss is one of a thousand women abducted by the Chiagan-Se as brides for a dying race. The males thought they'd come willingly, the women believed they'd been kidnapped and when the two sides meet, sparks fly.

Abaddon Rising is Book 3 in the Star Brides (Deg'Nara) Series. Joss is captured, enslaved and forced to fight in the alien gladiator ring...and then came Kanaan!

Snippet:

Yells and curses rent the air! Whips cracked overhead as the slave handlers rounded up their charges and herded them towards the conscripts’ quarters.
Joss ducked in time to avoid a direct hit from a serpentine strap before standing up. One of these days she silently vowed. I really hate those frickin’ whips! Physically drained and mentally brain-dead, she found a place in the straggling line and followed the exhausted slaves towards the dormitory. This rotation had been a singularly grueling one and she ached in every bone and muscle. Two more rotations and we’ll leave this shithole! And then what? If I win, I’m back here and if I lose…
The whole depressing scenario left her downhearted and hopeless. Only thing I can hope for is that Master Luidoc loses and I’m bought by a Master who’ll set me free! Fat chance that! The Destroyer will never be defeated in the ring and if I survive, I’m right back here! Big f’ing deal!
Without conscious thought, she kicked out, landing a solid blow on the lower leg of the slave ahead. The shaggy red head whipped around.
Watch ass, female,” the creature snarled from thin blue lips.
She stepped back, startled. The left portion of his face was a mass of burn scars, twisting the blue lips into a perpetual one-sided smile.
The yellow-green eyes snapped with anger. “Or I kills you next time!”
“Oh yeah,” she snapped back. “You and who else?”
Euo, she recalled. One of those conscripts slated for the mass battle. From her experience in the sparring bouts, his skills were modest at best and he’d be one of the first to fall. A brief surge of sympathy gave her a moment’s pause. Have I become so callous to the suffering of others? Edie would be so ashamed of me!
“I’m…I’m sorry,” she apologized. “Just tired!”
The shaggy red head dipped in an acknowledging nod. “Bad place here.” He spit into the dust. “Deg’Nara bad. All bad,” he hissed under his breath.

Kanaan perched on a high ledge watching the drama below. The female crouched against the slave gate glaring at the horde of leering male slaves as they crept forward. She wouldn’t last the night. None of the females did in here. She’d be torn limb from limb but not before she was forced to endure the bestial attentions of the dominant members of the pens. Too bad really! He admired the female. She was feisty, skilled, a born killer, but a female all the same.
He found it odd that her handler put her in here. She’d proven herself with every match, winning each round and advancing up the ladder. Usually an asset was treated with a little more respect, especially a female no less who’d won every bout. The crowds seemed to side with her during combat and he knew for a fact she’d made Master Luidoc’s pockets a little heavier. Didn’t make any sense that she’d be thrown in here!
He scrubbed a hand across his jaw considering. The female interested him for more than just her fighting skills. She was different, her species unknown to him. In many ways she reminded him of the Arkogian females. The body type was similar and they were known for jutting mammary glands but her delicate build and graceful movements decried that lineage. Arkogians were block-shaped and coarse, even more so than Deg’Nara females. Perhaps she’s a hybrid! Lot of us around these days, he admitted ruefully.
She’d drawn his attention from the first time he’d seen her fight in the pits. Slender and elegant, she looked more dancer than warrior. She was controlled, seeming bored even but that façade swiftly melted away when her opponent entered the ring. The only time he witnessed her control slip was when the female, Anashe he remembered, fell.
A few more paces and the mob would be on her and then it would be over. He drew a deep breath and exhaled. He stood up, gauging the distance to the ground and then dropped landing in front of the female.
He was within inches of the frontrunners of the mob, so close he could taste their reek. He spat, clearing his mouth of the vile aroma.
“Back off,” he growled, snapping his teeth. “Or it’ll be the last step you’ll ever take!”
